What is More than Circumstance?
‍More than Circumstance is a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization that harnesses the power of social media and bridges community resources to support individuals experiencing homelessness in London, ON.
‍What does your organization’s name mean?
‍To be more than your circumstances means your value as a human being does not diminish because of the stage of life you may be in. We believe this is particularly relevant to those experiencing homelessness, as such individuals tend to be unjustly discriminated against and perceived of as inferior. Our organization is intended to empower those experiencing homelessness, and also act as a reminder to housed individuals- homelessness is an experience that can happen to anyone. It is of utmost importance to treat everyone with dignity and kindness, and recognize the inherent value that a person has despite circumstances not always in one’s control.

What do mountains have to do with your work?
As a metaphor, the mountain represents homelessness itself. To overcome the uphill battle of homelessness, one must realize they are more than their circumstances, relying on traits such as perseverance, commitment, and determination. Taking one step at a time, one will gradually reach the peak of the mountain, where the beauty of the sun remains, and the remainder of life awaits to be explored.

In what ways does your organization actually help those experiencing homelessness?

Our organization has an emphasis on advocacy initiatives through social media. Through story telling and knowledge translation of the literature, we hope such initiatives will create a ripple effect in how those who view our content will engage with those experiencing homelessness. Additionally, we supplement our advocacy with events tailored towards the needs of London-based shelters and relief organizations (via volunteer support, drives, and fundraisers). We also organize our own events, such as hair cutting days and hygiene kit distributions.


What role do volunteers play in your non-profit operations, and how can individuals get involved?

Volunteers play a crucial role in our operations, especially as we would like to support shelters in the London area and facilitate our own events. Individuals can get involved by emailing ‘info@morethancircumstance.org’


Are there any opportunities to join the executive team?

There may be possibilities to join the executive team depending on the skill sets that you possess. Currently, MTC is looking for additional graphic designers and content creators.

Does your organization accept monetary donations? How will this donation be used?

Yes! All donations are welcomed and greatly appreciated. MTC is entirely volunteer-based and leans on the generosity of the community. 100% of donations will be used to further MTC’s operations to support those experiencing homelessness in London, Ontario.
